What actually causes BV - and why it keeps coming back
BV starts with one bacterium, Gardnerella vaginalis, outgrowing your natural balance. It releases a toxin called vaginolysin that damages your vaginal lining — and uses that damage to build a protective shield around itself, called a biofilm.
